Proof of funding

International students

International students must submit valid proof of funding to the International Students and Scholars Center when requesting certain updates to an I-20 or DS-2019: Extension to the program end date, change of degree level or matriculation, adding a dependent, returning student initial I-20, etc.

Acceptable Financial Documents

Personal or Family Funds

Funds must be in a savings or checking account. Other types of funds will be subject to review and additional documentation may be requested.

If the student is not an account holder of the savings or checking account submitted, a letter signed and dated by the account holder must be submitted along with the bank letter or bank statement. The account holder's letter must state that he/she is responsible for the student’s educational expenses at ASU. Please use this letter template.

ASU Department Funds

If the funding provided by ASU does not cover the required proof of funding amount, proof of additional personal or family funds will need to be submitted to make up the difference.

Government-Sponsored Funds

A financial guarantee letter or financial support letter which is valid for future semesters/academic year will be required.

Additional Information for students with authorized OPT or AT

For individuals requesting a dependent be added to their SEVIS record during an authorized period of Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Post-Completion Academic Training, a signed and dated employer offer letter citing salary amounts sufficient to cover expenses is acceptable.
